Loco’s latest collaboration with Director/Photographer Nicole Nodland is a short teaser film for French Magazine L’Officiel.

The video teaser is to accompany the cover story of Lana Del Rey shot in Topanga Canyon in Los Angeles. In this shoot, Lana is portrayed as ‘Rosalita’, Mexico’s movie star queen. Rosalita is to Mexico what Marilyn is to America … Mexico’s sweetheart. Mexico and its people have bestowed upon Rosalita with love and admiration the title “La magnífica Rosa”… she is so adored.

The photography portrays Rosalita mourning the death of her matador husband who died in a bullfight who she secretly married when she was 16 years old. Nicole persuaded her assistant River to don tights and the matador jacket to portray Rosalita’s dead matador lover.

Johnny Blueeyes and Nicole had a fantastic time acquiring the props for the story and making Rosalita come to life-building her altar and shrine to her dead matador lover. The french team at L’Officiel went to extraordinary lengths to get a real matador’s jacket, and the two teams worked seamlessly together to create ‘Rosalita’s’ story.

The footage was shot at 25fps and then time remapped to look super slow-motion to give it an ethereal, dreamlike feel. Digital retouching and colour grading further enhanced the piece and gave it a look to tie in seamlessly with the stills campaign.

The magazine will be on news stands on the 22nd March in France and world-wide soon after.

Loco Loves Chocolate

Credits:
Title: Queue
Product: Alpen Composition
Agency: Ogilvy Russia
Creative Directors: Carl Le Blond, Robin Weeks
Head of TV: Dmitry Nikonorov
Director: Carl Prechezer
Offline Edit – Matthew Felstead – Loaded dice
Online Edit/VFX – Lee Bamsey
Post Production Exec Producer: Dan Coster
VFX: Saša McCartney
Colour Grade: Dado

In keeping with the core idea of the previous  “Alpen effect” campaign, this new commercial re-establishes the relationship between chocolate eating and an optimistic outlook on life.

Shot on the Alexa on location in Ukraine, our dedicated VFX team set to work on turning the existing footage in to the director’s vision. This included replacing the sign on the front of the cinema, extending the netted lights, changing the colours of the neon and adding a new billboard image. The interior of the Cinema was dramatically enhanced with added screens and heavy vignetting, transforming a not so inspiring location into an inviting reception area. Particular items of clothing of people in the queue were also changed on request of the client.

Carl Prechezer’s vision for this comedy performance driven film was to highlight the romanticism of the piece, adding out of focus sparkles behind the characters and introducing additional colour palettes of pink and blue throughout with use of lighting and grade.

The commercial tells the story of a couple on a date, possibly even their first date.
We open on our young male waiting outside a cinema, his stomach is fluttering, heart beating as he waits. In his hands we see he is holding gifts of flowers and box of Alpen Composition chocolates.

Arriving a little late, our heroine runs to meet him and accepts the gifts with a wry smile. But as they enter the cinema they notice that they are now at the back of a huge queue for tickets. Our male seems disappointed and a pessimistic bubble pops up above his head. However in contrast our heroine takes a chocolate and then has a “light bulb” moment where she gets an idea and this is punctuated with the optimistic bubble above her head.

She then offers the people in front of her a chocolate from the box of composition.
Our male runs through a series of expressions, at first he’s shocked, then embarrassed, then impressed as she walks down the queue offering chocolates to the people in front of them, whist each time gaining a place further down the line.

We cut back to our guy as he peers past the people in front of him, reminding us that he’s still at the back of the queue. Our heroine reaches the front of the queue and orders 2 tickets and then finally our couple share a joint optimistic moment as they eat a chocolate and take their seats to enjoy the movie.

Another Luxurious Alpen Gold Moment

Agency: Ogilvy Russia
Creative Directors: Carl Le Blond, Robin Weeks
Head of TV: Dmitry Nikonorov
Director: Carl Prechezer
Post Production Exec Producer: Dan Coster
Post Production Producer: Chris McKeeman
VFX: Lee Bamsey
Colour Grade: Tom Balkwill

Just when you thought the story of the Alpen Gold holidaymakers was over, the second part of the commercial takes us back to their jet. Ogilvy Russia again commissioned Loco’s online, grading, and VFX team to bring the story to life. In the story’s epilogue, the plane encounters a patch of turbulence, so the optimist enjoys a piece of her almond and coconut chocolate bar and takes her mind off of the situation. When the pilot announces that they will need to make an emergency landing, the anxious pessimist grips the arms of the seat and her pessimist icon wobbles above her. The optimist looks toward the window, then turns to her friend as her cheery optimist icon swirls beside her. We cut to the airplane window, to find out the reason for her positivism and see the image of a luxurious island resort that Loco’s VFX team composited into the frame.

Loco’s cool new commercial for Kwik Fit and Ice Age 4

Adam&eveDDB asked Loco to post-produce a 20-second commercial to advertise Kwik Fit’s winter tyre offers. The new commercial, on air now, ties in Kwik Fit’s offer of 25% off winter tyres with the DVD release of the movie, Ice Age 4. Under a tight deadline, Loco’s VFX team set to work rotoscoping existing movie scenes supplied by 20th Century Fox and creating matte paintings of new background plates that would house the Kwik Fit offers.

Says Creative Director, Dan Coster, “Although on the surface this commercial looks like a simple online of existing footage, in fact, each scene had a bit of VFX magic applied – from time-remapping, tracking, and replacing expression timings on the characters, through to full CGI builds of icebergs, icy water and even winter tyres in the toon-like render style of the film.”

Mirroring VFX techniques from the actual movie, Loco used RealFlow to create the CGI sea environment. At the start of the ad, the Kwik Fit offer is shown carved into a giant Iceberg, which cracks and a section breaks off to float on the CGI sea. As part of the development of the commercial, Loco’s VFX team worked with the agency creatives in the offline edit to create CGI snowy mountains with the offers carved into stone and rotoscoped the existing footage to seamlessly blend the foreground characters into the new mountain environments. The final treatment included vast billboards that were integrated into the existing movie imagery with matte paintings.

The ad, as part of Kwik Fit’s integrated campaign, has been featured in The Drum and Campaign.

Chocolate makes everything better

Post Production Exec Producer: Dan Coster

Additional Sound Design: Steve Goldsmith
Audio Post Production: Eclectic

Loco has a sweet tooth, so we savoured the chance to work with director Carl Prechezer and the team from Ogilvy Russia on their campaign for Alpen Gold. Loco provided online editing, VFX and colour grade on their commercial, ‘optimism in your hands’ for the Russian and European markets.

Shot on the Alexa in the terminal and on the runway of a Ukrainian airport, Loco’s VFX team helped to transform the setting by designing and compositing replacement signage in Russian and English as well as creating a departures board to convincingly relocate the airport to Moscow. We even conjured up a blue sky to replace the dull, grey one filmed on the day. We also worked with the two Carls on the overall look of the ad to give it a fifties Technicolor feel with a bit of a contemporary twist.

The commercial tells the story of two women, an optimist and a pessimist trying to catch their flight for the start of their holiday. When they see that all the passenger routes are cancelled, the optimist takes a bite of chocolate and inspiration strikes. Observing that the cargo planes are still operating, she sweet talks their way onto a flight. But, all is not what it seems… In one of the key exterior scenes, the girls see a decrepit, old airplane struggling to start. Loco’s CGI team added spinning propeller blades and smoke to the shot of the static cargo plane. Loco’s producers even commissioned Steve Goldsmith to design some spluttering sounds to help the old plane cough to life. Fortunately for the holiday makers, their plane turns out to be a private jet with a handsome pilot, so they are able to share some more chocolate and an optimistic smile.

To highlight the pessimist and optimist connection to the characters and the brand, Loco’s VFX designers created lozenge icons to pop up at key points in the story. The brushed metallic pessimist symbol has a subtle glint while the bright, yellow optimist icon incorporates Alpen Gold’s multicoloured branding along its edges. Our animators added some fun, swirling movement to its colourful border. Our lozenge graphics delighted the agency so much that they decided to incorporate them into the print campaign and even into T-shirt designs.
